During the High Middle Ages (11th–14th centuries), the feudal system in Catalonia was organized around families of the high and low nobility—positioned directly below the king—with power structured through the institution of viscountcies. One of the most extensive and powerful of these was the Viscountcy of Cabrera, linked to the noble lineage of the same name, which used a black goat on a gold background as its heraldic symbol.
