Church of Sant Genís de Palafolls

RELIGIOUS ROUTE

From a religious point of view, the Viscountcy of Cabrera comprised a number of parishes with their respective churches and hermitages, which provided religious services to the local community. Several monasteries belonging to different religious orders were also founded there.

The church has been documented since 947, when it was under the authority of the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, and was consecrated as a parish church in 1079. The current building is the result of various extensions carried out over the course of a millennium, beginning with a rectangular nave oriented from east to west, with added chapels.

Notable features include the portal from 1502, bearing the inscription Joan Desclapers batlle dono aquest portal l’any 1502; the 16th-century defensive tower; the majestic 15th-century bell tower; and the Romanesque south wall, crowned with Lombard arcading, where the original entrance to the medieval church remains visible, bearing witness to its historical past and considerable architectural value.
