RELIGIOUS ROUTE

From a religious point of view, the Viscountcy of Cabrera comprised a number of parishes with their respective churches and sanctuaries, which provided religious services to the local community. Several monasteries belonging to different religious orders were also founded there.

The Monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda was founded in 1038 by Ermessenda de Montsoriu, Viscountess of Girona, and her husband, Guerau de Cabrera. Its church was consecrated in 1068. The bell tower is a notable example of Romanesque architecture, while the church’s nave began to be remodelled in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century. This renovation was completed at the beginning of the 16th century by Abbot Miquel Samsó, who also promoted the construction of the Gothic abbot’s palace. The cloister was completely remodelled around 1300, becoming an open central courtyard with a fountain at its centre, surrounded by upper and lower galleries connecting the different parts of the monastery, including the chapter house, refectory, cells, kitchen and church.
