L’Esquirol is a municipality located in the east of the Osona region. It originated in the 15th century as a small inn along the royal road between Vic and Olot.
The initial settlement formed around the farmhouse known as El Perai—also called *Hostal de l’Esquirol* after the surname of the family living there. The name Santa Maria de Corcó was adopted in 1743, when the parish was relocated from Corcó to the settlement of L’Esquirol.
The municipality currently comprises the settlements of Cantonigròs, Sant Julià de Cabrera, and Sant Martí Sescorts. Despite its growth, it retains quiet, charming spots. It serves as the natural gateway to Collsacabra—also known as Cabrerès—a region spanning the areas of Osona, La Garrotxa, and La Selva. Its landscape is characterized by sheer cliffs, green plateaus, streams, waterfalls, and hermitages. It is an ancient, inhabited territory rich in legends—blending witchcraft and religion, folk wisdom and tradition—shaped over time by the rugged terrain.
