It stretched from the woodland mountains of Montseny, the Guilleries Mountains and Collsacabra to the Mediterranean sea, with the centre located in the present-day region of La Selva. Its lords led lives worthy of the novels of chivalry. One such case is the viscount Bernat II de Cabrera, who in the 14th century became the principal advisor and admiral to the king, Pere el Cerimoniós (Peter the Ceremonious), and transformed the castle of Montsoriu, the seat of power of the line, into a impregnable gothic fortress.
The viscounts of Cabrera ensured the defence and control of its territory through a network of castles and stronghouses, which were the bases of the political and military power of medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by the presence of numerous walled villages and watchtowers.
The viscountcy of Cabrera had other distinguished characters, such as the viscountess Ermessenda de Montsoriu, founder of the Breda monastery in the 11th century, the notary of Hostalric, Pere de Santantoni, or the cosmographer and merchant, Jaume Ferrer de Blanes, who participated in the distribution of the world in the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. Nowadays, we can still admire numerous places and monuments which transport us back to the age of the viscounts and its cast of players: lofty castles, lonely hermitages, protective walls, silent monasteries, watchtowers... A full patrimonial legacy that allows us to travel back to the Middle Ages, all while we enjoy a range of modern-day activities and services.
