Church of Sant Llop de Viabrea

RELIGIOUS ROUTE

The viscountcy of Cabrera was a territory which, in the religious sphere, comprised various parishes with their churches and hermitages offering religious services for society. Likewise, many different monasteries of various religious orders were founded.

Originally, this church was called Sant Esteve de Sabruguera, but at the beginning of the 16th century, an altar dedicated to Sant Llop was added, and within a few years, this became titlular. The church may date back to the 10th or 11th centuries and in 1246, it can be found mentioned in a papal bull from Pope Innocent IV regarding the monastery in Breda. Since the medieval period, this rural parish had been part of the viscountcy of Cabrera (within the district of Montsoriu Castle and Orri bailiwick), and between the 16th and 18th centuries, became the sufragan of the parish of Riells. The building and its contents suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939, and its latest restoration was carried out in 1982
