MILITARY ROUTE

The viscountcy of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and fortified houses, which were the seats of politic and military power for the nobility in the Middle Ages. This defensive system was supplemented with a number of walled-in villages and watchtowers.

The castle of Sant Iscle was contructed in the 12th century and is part of the viscountcy of Cabrera. In the 13th century, it was significantly reformed; the master tower was demolished and a rectangular enclosure with four-angled towers was built. At the beginning of the 14th century, it was the residence of Elionor de Aguilar, mother of viscount Bernat II de Cabrera. It was reformed in the 15th century and affected by earthquakes and the War of the Remences, and was finally abandoned suddenly in the year 1500. Only the chapel of Sant Iscle continued to function and processions were held there until the mid-19thcentury. In the chapel, the relics of Sant Iscle were held, before being partially transferred to the monastery of Breda in 1263.
