Malgrat de Mar, officially founded as Vilanova de Palafolls in 1373, has traditionally been an agricultural village with considerable maritime trade and, since the 19th century, significant industrial activity.

It is, therefore, a very diverse town, as over the course of its history it has been home to fishermen, miners (in the early 20th century, the mines of Can Palomeres were exploited, though they are now closed) and farmers, who still cultivate the lands of the Grau Plain today. Around 1960, tourism began to develop in the municipality; it is now a well-established destination, with a wide range of establishments that have evolved over time.

Malgrat de Mar enjoys a pleasant climate almost all year round and is known for its tranquillity and long beaches, with more than 4.5 km of coastline. It boasts several natural areas of considerable environmental value, offering scenic walks through unique and unparalleled landscapes, such as the new sandbar at the mouth of the Tordera River, which includes a birdwatching point. In addition, the town features two exceptional urban green spaces: the Parc del Castell and the Parc de Francesc Macià. If you venture into the old town, you’ll discover the historical setting in which it stands, along with its main monuments and buildings, which will take you on a journey from the Middle Ages to the present day.
