The municipality of Fogars de la Selva lies at the southernmost edge of the county of Selva and to the south borders the county of Maresme, to which it belonged until the territorial division of Catalonia in 1936.

The name Falgars (later becoming Fogars) was first recorded in 922, in reference to the Parish Church of Sancti Cypriani et Sanctae Justae in villa Falgars. The area later came under the control of the Viscounts of Girona, followed by the Viscounts of Cabrera. From the 12th to the 19th century, Fogars formed part of the domain of Hostalric Castle. With the provincial division of 1833, it was incorporated into the province of Barcelona.

The municipality is known for its extensive woodland, dominated by pine, holm oak and oak trees. On the plain, cereals, vines, vegetables and poplars are cultivated. In the past, copper and lead mines were also exploited, though these are now abandoned.

In the 1990s, Fogars underwent significant urban development, transforming the old residential areas of the town centre while preserving a large number of scattered farmhouses across the municipality. It boasts two parish churches: Sant Cebrià de Fogars and Sant Andreu de Ramió.
